Which is best: Android or iPhone?

Working at a digital agency, I’ve just about had enough of the scorn of the iphone and android users as I whip out my stone-age, old-reliable, falling apart nokia. But which gang to join? Each is certain about their choice, but unable to give definite answers why. “Because it’s way better” doesn’t help me make an informed choice.

The Confession App – A Homily

Well, isn’t it nice to see the Catholic Church embrace change.

Galileo would not have been too impressed by this app. Not believing that the Earth is the centre of the universe isn’t on the apps list of sins.

It’s been a long time since my last confession, but I’m sure it was back in that time when I was worried that I was endanger of going blind if I did not repent. For many rambling off the usual list of sins every month to a stranger in a dark box was unappealing.

So this app has been designed with me and others sinners in mind who have not partaken in the sacrament of reconciliation in a long time. The logic behind the app is that it will make the journey back to the confessional a bit easier and re-light a lapsed faith.

A short review of 2010

It’s not quite the new year, but I thought I’d take the opportunity to review what’s impressed us in 2010. We had the Chilean Miners being rescued, the Big Freeze and the rise of Justin Bieber. (Peggy told me to put that in). But we also had the launch of the the long awaited iPad and the iPhone 4. And even a movie about Facebook, how times have changed.

Foursquare’s Fighting Chance

Facebook Places has finally arrived in Ireland and the debate about the future of it’s rival Foursquare has been re-ignited in the Twittersphere.  When Facebook rolled out Places in the US last year many people predicted that Foursquare’s days would be numbered.  At the time Denis Crowley, Foursquare’s CEO, stood defiant, saying that there was room for Places and Foursquare. But you couldn’t help but think it was only a matter of time before the Facebook behemoth was the only location-based show in town.  After all, Facebook Places had 500 million readymade users, Foursquare had just 1.5 million.

Let it Snow

A Snowy Mount Street

As two weeks of a mini-age comes to a slushy end, I thought this would be a good opportunity to see what the digital world’s been doing to help us get through the chilly spell.

As a parent, I was impressed by one proactive parent’s simple initiative. They took it upon themselves to contact all the other parents every morning via text or email to let them know whether the school was open. It may seem like an easy and obvious thing to do, but I was flabbergasted to hear that many schools had little or no communication with parents by text or email.

The Future of Facebook

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Getting bigger than Google? Seems like Facebook have their sights set high, as they continue to add new products and services to their growing arsenal of features. With Places, Groups and an increased partnership with Bing and Skype all announced in the last few months, Facebook’s path to online dominance may even be faster than that.
